ABOUT
MARIELA MURILLO

Originally from Sinaloa and an architect by profession, Mariela Murillo discovered chukum in Tulum, where she learned its artisanal application directly from Mayan workers on a daily basis.

After years of working on construction sites, she returned to the north of the country determined to found HERENTE®: a project that honors the heritage of the material and takes it to new territories in northeastern Mexico with sensitivity, technique, and purpose.

Mariela runs her own design and architecture studio, where she focuses on:

ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN

Architectural design, interiors, landscaping, furniture, and finishes.

SUPERVISION

Coordination of construction, suppliers, costs, and budgets (in person or remotely).

A SHORT WALK AWAY FROM DISCOVERING A WORLD OF SENSATIONS

Havardia Albicans, the Chukum Tree

Chukum water is a natural resin extracted from the bark of this tree, endemic to the Yucatán Peninsula, which naturally sheds from this tree. It’s obtained through traditional, artisanal methods without harming or cutting down the tree.

Crafting the Finish

The Chukum base combines Chukum water with white cement and fine limestone powder sourced from the same region. At Herente, we also add select elements to create unique pigments.

The Art of Chukum Application

The installation process is entirely handcrafted. Our team has specialized in understanding the material’s behavior to ensure the best performance and a flawless finish.

A Finish That Elevates Spaces

Thanks to its natural properties, this finish can be applied as a coating for pools, and on facades or interior surfaces, bringing depth and character to every environment.
